50 Portraits - Portrait #18

Updated: Jan 30, 2019

Recently I was listening to Seth Godin in an interview where Seth mentioned something that was terrifying and at the same time inspiring.  He said as an artist ask yourself who’ll miss you when you’re gone.  That sounded too broad and he didn’t want to define what gone meant so he rephrased it further.  Will anyone miss you if you didn’t show up with your work.  If the answer is none, then,’the followers’,  they’re merely tolerating you.  Those are scary strong words and can be discouraging.  But if we see the purpose behind such a statement it’ll give us inspiration to do more work, put in more hours and create something that we’ll be truly proud of.  The goal is to not be better but be different as Chase Jarvis says.  Something that’ll be one of the treasures that was hidden inside of us and only us.  Instead of being discouraged by no one missing us if we’re gone, we can strive to create something no one else in the world can create.  The path to being there is discovery of self, my own voice.  The path to self discovery is through experimentation, copying our inspirations, learning from them to get better at our craft and doing something different after we have mastered the craft.  After a point everyone is at the same level when it comes to techniques and craft.  What separates the great artists from mediocre ones are the unique art that they created that only they could see and build.

Camera settings were f4.5, 1/125, ISO 200.
