50 Portraits - Portrait #8

This is my cousin.  We used to fight a lot when we were kids but I wish I was not rude to him on some occasions.  I’m sure I was just being a silly kid.  Even today sometimes the way I react to some things makes me wonder if I’m still one.

Today though my cousin has achieved a lot on his own and is a proud son despite a great deal of financial struggles.

The most difficult part of this portrait wasn’t the technical part.  Do you see a theme here?  I keep saying this after every shoot now.  The difficult part was him standing like a statue holding his breath.  No matter what I said he just wouldn’t relax.  Every time I put my camera down he’d start breathing again.  So I asked him to shake his arms like he’s shrugging, made him do a little neck exercise to relax his body a little bit.  Folded hands stance to give him a little more comfort and confidence in his stance so he won’t feel awkward standing in front of the camera. Folded arms can infuse a little confidence and that’s what it did here with that little smirk on his face.

Camera (Canon 1100d) settings f4.5, 1/125, ISO 100 with probably 1/8 power on flash in a softbox camera left.
